L'orchestration rituelle du partage des émotions et ses ressorts interactionnels

Abstract : In order to highlight the interactional dynamics underlying the collective expression of emotions in rituals, the authors look at rituals from various cultural traditions: on the one hand, funeral rites of Australian Aborigines and the Kaluli of New Guinea, and on the other hand, dances of "self-discovery" deriving from the personal development movement that emerged during the twentieth century in the West. This allows them to illustrate three closely intertwined aspects of ceremonial participation: (1) a shared willingness to contribute to the correct performance of the ritual, (2) a performance based on the systematic coordination of the disparities that distinguish their respective behaviors, and (3) a reciprocal attunement of the intensity of the emotional expressions involved in the pursuit of these behaviors. The analysis emphasizes the role played by third party mediators and the coupling of performers.
