Abstract : This notice “forest” presents a historical point of view. After defining the concept of "Mediterranean forest", the paper redraws the various evolutions of the forest uses until today: feeder, agricultural, pastoral, artisanal and industrial, recreational and touristic usages. The article also discusses the impact of these practices on ecosystems and landscapes. It examines the perceptions of the "Mediterranean forest" since the 19th century then the construction of the Mediterranean forest as a scientific concept and the birth of a Mediterranean silviculture through the movement Sylva Mediterranea.
