Les Méditations métaphysiques en tant que méditations

Abstract : The French tradition of Cartesian commentary has not often interpreted the theme of Metaphysical Meditations as meditations. It has not however completely ignored it, where the interest lies to evaluate the situation on the antecedents and outlines of this theme in critical contemporary French philosophy, to measure its impact by situating the Meditations toward the contempla-tive genre and to propose a double interpretation of Descartes'text, not only as a metaphysical treatise, but also as a continuation of voluntary exercises. This type of voluntary exercise contributes , in a major way, to its originality, and assigns to a text with a theoretical reputation such as Metaphysical Meditations an eminently practical finality : the assimilation of metaphysical truths and not only their demonstration.
