During several years, the manufacturing of the soundtrack in the cinema was realized by the sound engineer and the mixer. Recently, a new job was created which took an increasing place in the organization and the cooperation between the actors. It is the sound editor. His work consists in building the soundtrack of the movie, in particular with sound materials such as the voices, the environment sounds and also with what we call the effects (in fact the noises). Associated with the integration of new technologies, with the evolution of the audio quality in the cinema, with the desires of new sound writings of the authors and the directors and in a concomitant way in an increasing demand of the public for a " new " soundtrack, the sound editor is fitted into the sound chain creation. From the very beginning, his arrival, quickly associated with the new postproduction tools, upset the organization of the work. It led to a reorganization of the tasks and to a partial separation of the work of the sound, in its relation with the image. The editor and the sound editor become two different actors. More recently, the sound editor begins, for economic and technical reasons, to assume tasks, which were previously devolved to the mixer. But how far will the sound editor go ?
Durant de très nombreuses années, la fabrication de la bande sonore au cinéma a été réalisée par le chef opérateur du son et le mixeur. Depuis peu, un nouveau métier s'est imposé qui a pris une place croissante dans l'organisation et la coopération entre les acteurs. Il s'agit du monteur son. Son travail consiste à construire la bande sonore du film, en particulier grâce à différentes matières sonores comme les voix, les ambiances et également ce que l'on nomme les effets (en fait les bruits). Associé à l'intégration de nouvelles technologies, à l'évolution des conditions de diffusion en salle, aux désirs de nouvelles écritures sonores des auteurs et des réalisateurs et de manière concomitante à une demande croissante du public pour une « nouvelle » bande sonore, le monteur son s'est inséré dans la chaine du son. Dès l'origine, son arrivée, associée rapidement à l'usage de nouveaux outils de post-production, a bouleversé l'organisation du travail. Cela a conduit à une réorganisation des tâches et à une séparation partielle du travail du son, dans sa relation à l'image. Le monteur et le monteur son deviennent deux acteurs différents. Plus récemment, le monteur son se met, pour des raisons économiques et techniques, à assumer des tâches qui étaient auparavant dévolues au mixeur. Mais, jusqu'où ira le monteur son ?
