Efficacité de l'utilisation d'un codage symbolique comme outil de régulation dans l'enseignement des patrons du cube chez des élèves de 9 à 11 ans

Abstract : The cube can be developed in a finite number of ways (11). These "patterns" are taught in French elementary schools. The present article describes a series of experiments conducted in classrooms. The results show that pupils "invent" coding systems for building patterns and testing their correctness, and than the use of a symbolic code (letters) on the faces of the cube significantly improves pupils' performance when they have to distinguish "right" from "wrong" patterns. The improvement is even greater when appropriate teaching materials (small wooden cubes) are used. Use of a symbolic code as an aid to decision-making would appear to be an effective component of the regulatory processes the pupils implement in problem solving.
