Automatic zoning of landscape structures by spatial discontinuities recognition

Résumé

The geographical space, the space studied by geographers, can be distinguished from the Euclidean space, theoretically uniform, by the existence of distinct and differentiated units. Each one of them shows a particular aspect of the landscape. This one appears as the significative interface of the dynamics and relations that the society has with the space. The hypothesis is that the geographic space has as local appearance, the landscape. The border between two landscapes (therefore between two separate states of geographic space), is characterized by the spatial discontinuities which can have several aspects. The research and the visualization of the spatial discontinuities has been made by the use of the new methodologies of satellite images segmentation based on new textural analysis processing. The outcome of the use of different satellite images like Landsat TM and Spot XS, is a similar partition of the geographical space in landscape units. They correspond to the aggregation of urban and agricultural production systems' types. The selected zone is the Comtat avignonnais situated in the south of France in the region of Avignon. This zone is composed of many types of urban and agricultural production's landscapes.
