Accéder aux compétences syntaxiques des élèves (8-11 ans) : le cas des relatives

Abstract : Accessing the syntactic competences of pupils (aged 8 to 11): the case of relative clauses In this paper, we propose a syntactic analysis of the relative pronouns in writing texts, at the micro level (within the sentence) and at the macro level (inside the text). This study focuses on the relative clauses employed in 132 narrative texts (pupils aged 8 to 11). The analysis shows an inequality in the use of relative clauses and refers to notions of competence and register. The results highlight on how pupils use relative clauses in their text: in combination role (on the syntagmatic axis) and more rarely, in filling list (on the paradigmatic axis). These first results on the use of relative clauses are valuable clues to think teaching at school.
