Nouveaux éléments de discussion chronologiques dans le paysage des Grottes ornées de l’Ardèche : Oulen, Chabot et Tête-du-Lion

Abstract : As partof the “Projet Datation Grottes Ornées”, some new 14C AMS dating have been obtained from bones and charcoals samples comingfrom the archaeological deposits of three Palaeolithic rock art caves situated along the Ardèche river in southern France (Oulen, Chabot,Tête-du-Lion). As expected, all the results pertain to the Solutrean period, between 18000 and 22000BP (22000 – 27500calBP).They are coherent with the dates obtained previously and/or with the archaeological context. Their chronological relationship with theproduction of rock art is discussed here in details as well as the relevance and reliability of the link of contemporaneity created between(a) the archaeological deposit and (b) the production of rock art. It appears that some disparities exist between the different sitesregarding the number and quality of logical links that are able to sustain the attribution of these radiocarbon dates to one or more rockpaintings/engravings present nearby. At last, this paper insists on the importance to explicit the chronological links used to associateradiometric results and rock art designs in our chronological scenarios.
