Mudéjares. La liberté du dominé (Espagne XII e -XV e)

Abstract : There is no denying the mudejares’ legal and social inferiority nor their tragical assimilation in the 16th century. Nevertheless, we can notice how the mudejares managed to secure for themselves some areas of political freedom and some room for manoeuvre – and consequently for power– this in spite of their condition of dominated men, their weakening and the pressure of some Christian actors. This emancipatory dynamics does not merely preserve cultural and social integrity. The individual will of the mudejar takes an occasional advantage of the new relation of power between Christians and Muslims to take the upper hand over the will of the community and make the tradition move on.
