Abstract : In the university training in urban planning approved by the APERAU, the so-called "professional" workshop is the key educational element of a "by practice" project learning. In this article, the authors propose to explore a complementary form of pedagogy of the project, the case study. If the workshop participates in a project learning by "composition", the case study exercise proceeds rather with the "decomposition" of all the things that had been put together in order to arrive at the situation observed at the present time. Based on the experience of conducting a teaching module within a Master 2 in the urban planning field, the aim is first of all to review the foundations and specificities of the case study. Then, secondly, to advance a series of pedagogical contributions, the case study of which appeared to be the bearer, and finally in a third time to mirror these pedagogical contributions with those more heuristic resulting from its application to a precise object: the exterior spaces of residential complexes labelled "Patrimony of the 20th century" in Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. The article makes it possible to highlight in particular three "ingredients" constitutive of the culture, knowledge and skills of the urban planner, based on the contributions of the proposed case study: a reading of operations by its "external spaces" calling a reflection on the urban scale, a mastery of urban knowledge and know-how through the articulation between theories and practices, a retrospective apprehension of the actors and devices regarding to their influences on the design, composition and evolutions of the project . Beyond these different "ingredients" that it allows to mobilize, the case study also participates in an opening of apprentices-urban planners to other forms of projects, here the architectural project, while maintaining the specificity of their approach to urban spaces.
