Vieilles et vieux face au VIH en Afrique de l'Ouest : l'exemple du Burkina Faso

Abstract : The abundant literature on persons facing HIV underlines how indicative this epidemic is for the study of social issues. This chapter deals with the specificities of mutual support systems and their transformations, in close relation to the social status acquired by so-called third age persons. Disparities according to gender and socio-economic situations shed light on what ageing encompasses for older persons living with HIV or facing the disease of a close relative. Support seems to be more and more related to the carers’ respect for the older person, and more especially so within the family. Extra family solidarities however more often falls under a cycle of reciprocity.
