Muhammad le chrétien : Instrumentalisations de la question confessionnelle et consolidation du régime autoritaire

Abstract : During the past four years, religious conversions have mobilized Egyptian public opinion. Allegedly forced conversions to Islam of Coptic girls and trials of Christians wishing to officially recover their Christian identity after a temporary conversion to Islam both became the battlefield in which various political and religious currents confront each other. The year 2007 was characterized by the unprecedented case of a young Muslim man who publicly announced his conversion to Christianity and tried to change his religious affiliation on his official papers by bringing suit before the administrative court. In this article, I will relate Muhammad Higâzi’s conversion story in order to bring out some of the political issues related to these conversions cases.
