Género, economía ilícita y estrategias de supervivencia: las mujeres y el contrabando en el sureste de Francia en el siglo XVIII

Abstract : From the high valleys of the French province of Dauphiné to the streets of Lyon and Grenoble, this article focuses on women engaged in salt and calicos smuggling between the last decades of the seventeenth century and the French Revolution. For women, whom the law specifically excluded from a wide range of professional and licit activities, the underground economy offered possibilities for earning a living and operating in the market, even in precarious circumstances. Thus, this article adopts a nuanced definition of agency, by taking into account not only the margin for manœuvre available to women who had to cope with economic uncertainty, but also the constraints on their independence of action.
