Les historiens de l’ancienne faculté des lettres d’Aix et les études régionales (1846-1970)

Abstract : The professors of history of the faculté des lettres d’Aix-en-Provence, created in 1846, do not care about Provencal studies until the «turning point» of the 1880s. Georges Guibal begins then to pay attention to regional history and specialized chairs are created, including that of the history of Provence (1894). The first theses of Provencal history are supported at the faculty or at the Sorbonne but their authors do not gain access to higher education. The intrusion of academics into a domain previously reserved for local scholarship was not without problems, with the «quarrels» between Bourrilly and Bertas, Clerc and Duprat. The founding of the Institut Historique de Provence in 1923 and the creation (1950) and the evolution of Provence historique marked the stages of the affirmation of the regional university history. The influence of the Annals movement and the widening of the fields of history are then appreciable through the local or regional subjects of the great State theses that will mark the «thirty glorious years » of regional university history in France, the 1960s, 1970 and 1980.
