Femmes, villes et économie de la mode dans l'espace euro-méditerranéen au XVIIIe siècle

Abstract : In the eighteenth century, the fashion trade was one of the few niches that allowed women to pursue an independent commercial activity in complete autonomy. The correspondence addressed to Mademoiselle Mandier, a fashion merchant in Lyon, by her clients and her commission agent, sheds light on this woman’s attempt to build a prestigious international clientele, conquering in particular the Italian market. It invites us to question the driving forces behind the action and self-presentation of a “woman in business” in Europe in the second half of the eighteenth century.
