Entre diabolisation, séduction et légitimation. Le kitsch ou l'imitation comme « mal esthétique » ?

Abstract : On the basis of Clement Greenberg’s distinction between the avant-garde as “imitating the act of imitation” and kitsch as “imitating the effect of imitation” in order to provoke the pleasure of the senses, we will show that kitsch induces a “culinary enjoyment” (Adorno) in producing works that often result in a kind of aesthetic plagiarism, as remonstrated by Broch or demonstrated by Walter Killy in his pastiches of the style of famous German speaking authors in Deustcher Kitsch. One might see in this style based on imitation a form of fetishism of art (Adorno), an aesthetic or even ethical aberration (Broch) or a failure of imagination or of the creative genius. Kitsch may also be seen as the manifestation of the loss of the work’s cultic and auratic value and its appropriation by all (Benjamin). But one also may analyse its playful and subversive dimension, possibly revealing the all too human fascination for the inauthentic and artificial.
