Changements à long terme des paysages forestiers dans cinq parcs nationaux métropolitains et le futur parc national des forêts de Champagne et Bourgogne

Abstract : In national parks in metropolitan France, where the forest area has grown considerably since the middle of the 19th century, interest in the ancient forests they accommodate has been growing in recent years. Having identified them, national park authorities now wish to gain more knowledge about their specificities so as to better preserve them and offer suitable management methods. A comparison between the six territories surveyed showed up a strong increase in forest area —from 5 % in the heart of the Port-Cros National Park to nearly 100 or 200 % in the mountain national parks and 340 % in the Cévennes Park. The history of the territories is also reflected in the distribution of topographic features, estates and dominant species in both ancient and recent forests. Indeed, ancient forests tend to be located in mountain areas on the steep slopes and on the cold side, i.e. places that are less suitable for farming. Conversely, recent forests appear to be the outcome of natural recolonisation (pioneer species on more readily accessible land) or of reforestation (e.g. state forests under the RTM scheme on slopes). These results show that abandonment of farmland, successive reforestation policies or even changes in pastoral practices are major drivers common to woodland changes. They can be applied directly in all of these territories. To go further, it is important to gain knowledge about the biodiversity associated with the continuity of woodland status and the effect of management methods, both past and present, on that biodiversity. Furthermore, it would be useful to study the spatial layout of forests and the degree of interconnection between ancient and recent forests.
