Les paysages et les hommes des Alpes du sud dans les carnets de Paul Vidal de La Blache

Abstract : Before writing his « Tableau de la géographie de la France (Introduction à l’histoire de France by Ernest Lavisse, 1903 », Paul Vidalde la Blache, traveled up and down the territory of France, notebook in hand, from north to south and from east to west. Between 1888 and 1907, six of his nine trips to Provence were focused on the southern Alps from Pelvoux to the Maritime Alps and from Montgenèvre Pass to the opening of Mirabeau. Several emblematic landscapes described in Vidal’s travel notebooks are examined here to show how he gave his major attention to the study of human-environment relationships and how he laid the bases for what would later become the analysis of terroirs.
