Cuerpo y naturaleza. El protagonismo del medio ambiente en «Waslala» de Gioconda Belli y «Azul maligno» de César Rodríguez Indiano

Abstract : In this article, we offer a comparative analysis of two Central American novels: Waslala (1996) from the Nicaraguayan author Gioconda Belli and Azul maligno (2000) by the Hondurian César Rodriguez Indiano. In these two novels, the natural environment has such a prominence that it becomes a protagonist. Each novel describes a quest that becomes a simple pretext for the author to make a severe ecological critic. Indeed, the quest of Waslala by Melisandra only appears in the last pages of Waslala and the investigation on the murder of Pescador sin Fortuna in Azul maligno is the occasion, for the narrator, to meet a myriad of characters and places all connected by the lake of Yojoa, that appears to be the main character. These two searches are the opportunity to find, create and unravel myths, legends and fables that encourage a discourse on the ecological environment and the dangers that modernity and human activities represent. The river in the novel of Belli and the lake in the work of Rodriguez Indiano are central elements that enable the reader to travel and to get to meet the protagonists.
