Abstract : This chapter proposes a questioning of the notion of epistemology as a tool to fight against dropping out of school. It is based on the observation of a teaching-learning situation studied in the context of the “school orchestra” system. This notion describes the beliefs and representations of the teacher without necessarily taking into consideration the contexts in which the knowledge or know-how to be taught is inscribed. In what way can the practical epistemology of the teacher be a tool in the fight against dropping out of school? The analysis of two excerpts from lessons given by a flute teacher to a group of learners (pupils, teachers, parents) provides food for thought on the relationship between teaching and learning in an open context. It shows how certain aspects of practical epistemology can paradoxically help in the fight against dropping out of school.
