Contribution à une géographie des gilets jaunes. Des centres urbains de la colère aux ronds-points de la contestation

Abstract : This article is an introduction to a geography of the social movement of yellow vests whose actions began on November 17, 2018 and which is still continuing on September 15, 2019. With a multi-scalar approach, he will seek to identify a certain number of mechanisms inherent in this movement, in particular the two emblematic types of mobilization that are the occupation of roundabouts and the demonstrations that took place in Paris. First, we will assess the distribution and dissemination of the yellow vests events in France in order to measure the organization and certain characteristics of a movement whose weekly media coverage has focused on Parisian events and their spillovers. Through the example of Paris, we will seek to identify the characteristics of the overflows and clashes that have been widely reported by television news channels. We will then focus on the more lasting and peaceful nature of the mobilization of yellow vests through the occupation of roundabouts, thanks to the study of an occupied roundabout emblematic of the movement. We will study there the modalities of development and operation of these road traffic tools transformed into places of resistance and social struggle.
