Representing the early republic(s) abroad: Mazzei's ambassadorship to Europe between parallel diplomacy and propaganda

Abstract : Philip Mazzei’s story is largely one of high hopes and unfulfilled aspirations. Viewed retrospectively, his greatest contribution to the American revolutionary cause somewhat frustratingly appears to have been one of dedicated propaganda, often involving both literal and figurative “translations” or reinterpretations of American events for European audiences whom, as he believed, had been misled in their visions of America by inaccurate renditions of the nation’s revolutionary memory - to refer to the title of today’s seminar
