Abstract : The concept of practical epistemology stems from the philosophy of science, mainly oriented from the 1960s onwards towards an epistemology of the social foundations of knowledge. Our study is interested in the results of research carried out in this framework to question the foundations of the pedagogical practices of music teachers. After situating the meaning of the notion of practical epistemology in science and then in teaching, including music teaching, we illustrate and comment on it through examples taken from instrument methods and group lesson situations before discussing its operationalisation in music teaching.
