Travail, guerre et relations sociales. La participation salariée à une entreprise : Technique de gestion, utopie et engagement de soi.

Abstract : Instead of wondering about the "end of work", isn’t it better to question the transformations of the wage system, the changes of social relations, the dialectic of conflicts in labor relations? Therefore, the concept of " participation " is a good object of study, which first uses date back nearly two centuries ago. Since the nineteenth century, some employers have introduced "profit sharing" in their companies; then, experiments have been made over time to expand the idea of "participation" to management and business organization, through representative bodies, working arrangements by autonomous teams, or even groups of direct expression. These different uses ideally combine to transform the employee into a "citizen" of the company. Discourses and uses of participation shows that it is either praised, seeked, required, or fought, banished, forbidden. This raises a new question: can "participation" entirely be contained in management techniques? Analysis of work situations shows that in order to achieve goals at work, it always requires a "participation" of employees, a self commitment, even minimal: either in a team of shifts workers in a chemical industry or a peace keeper team. "Participation in action" highly depends on the conditions of the work, therefore on the work situation and on the relations that can be developed. Finally, we can say that participation in the context of labor relations can never be characterized and sustainably and invariably predictable, it carries traces of wage contradictions.
