Abstract : American Catholics, though very heterogeneous in their migratory background, forged, from the origins of the United States to the Cold War, a very specific imaginary of their own presence in a society that strongly rejects their religion. This narrative of justification and resistance to contempt and exclusion recovered the Protestant model of American Exceptionalism, to digest it in their favor. The result is a unknown synthesis, Catholic Americanism, which has greatly contributed to the civic and patriotic integration of this minority
