Débats et contestations autour des aménagements forestiers d’un « haut-lieu » : la forêt domaniale de la Sainte-Baume

Abstract : The forest of Sainte-Baume, located close to Marseille in Provence, is exceptional by its history and its ecosystem. Consequently, its forest management brings about many debates. The article presents these exceptional features: an ecosystem characterized by the presence of trees needing cold, shade and humidity (beech, yew, holly), a place of pilgrimage protected from the exploitations since the Middle Ages, a place of tourism and hiking, a forest, seen as a "primary” forest, a "climax” forest or a "relic” forest, observed by naturalists, botanists and foresters. At the same time, the paper deals with the debates and the implementations of local and regional forest managements since the 19th century: exploitation / non-utilization of wood, tourism development, national park project, integral natural reserve, directed biological reserve, managements to preserve the beech grove, implementation of the new national policy of protection of “natural forest areas”. Ultimately, this article aims to show the interaction between anthropogenic managements and forest ecosystems thanks to a study on the “long time”.
