Abstract : The essay presented here tries to understand why the morphoclimatic hypthesis presented by French geomorphologists up to very recently, in view of explaining the quaternary morphogenesis on the northern shore and on the southern shore of the Mediterranean, have supposed that the second one was humid and cold when the first one was dry and cold. The ansewer is searched in the history of French geomorphological research in North Africa.
