« Aux origines de la démagogie : naissance et manipulation d’un concept »

Abstract : Aristotelian analysis has imposed in European thought a very negative understanding of ‘demagogy’. The origin and construction process of this interpretation must be questioned. The concept of demagogy, first documented in the last quarter of the fifth century, may result from the sophistic interest in the use of techne rhetorike and their thinking about how to be influent in a democracy. But the deliberate combination of the two concepts of demagogos and prostates demou quickly became a way either to imagine the possibility of élite leadership at the head of the city, or to discredit democracy itself. In both cases, the assimilation of demagogue to the prostates tou demou, originating from oligarchic ideology, is tantamount to denying the ability of the people, in a democratic city, to know where their interest lies and how to rule themselves.
