La Méditerranée de Tériade pendant l’entre-deux guerres

Abstract : This article deals with the uses of the concept of the Mediterranean by the art critic Tériade in interwar France. Aligning himself with the then dominant intellectual and artistic trend that considered Southern/Mediterranean art superior to Northern/German art, he stressed in his writings the Mediterranean origin of the artists that he wished to promote as well as the Mediterranean features of their art. Being himself of Greek origin his arguments about the mediterraneity of art and artists reflected back on him as a means of integration into the French cultural establishment.
