Le plan de Tunis de 1882 – Quand la qualité graphique compense la faiblesse des sources

Abstract : At the beginning of the 1880s, cartographic engineers of the French army were very active in Tunisia. At the same time, they prepare general topographic maps of the country and a detailed representation of Tunis suroundings. The archives relating to the production of this plan testify to the methods implemented. Operators work in an emergency context that does not allow to develop the methods used for regular surveys. The result obtained gives the appearance of work done according to the rule book. However, it stems from the cartographer’s skill rather than from the quality of field surveys.
