Villas résidentielles, villas productives et économie domaniale sur les territoires des cités romaines d'Arles, Aix et Marseille

Abstract : This article is a contribution to the geography of villas in Roman Gaul. It discusses the discoveries of archaeological sites identified as villas on the territory of the Roman sites of Aquae Sextiae, Arelate and Assilia. To this end, it distinguishes between the residential and productive functions of the villas. The term villa is used in the context it has taken in archaeological vocabulary to designate one or more buildings which have had one of these two functions. The presence of a residential building defines a villa as the center of an estate. The presence of a mausoleum materializes a link with the local aristocrats of the neighboring towns. Epigraphic discoveries have established in some cases that the residential part of the villas had lost their original functions: they had been abandoned or assigned to an attendant who would manage the estate. The 475 sites with villas are located and presented in their geographical context. The objective of this article is threefold. It offers a framework for the integration of an epigraphic discovery or that of an archaeological excavation in the considered space. He contributes to a bank of archaeological discoveries on these types of rural establishments and on the division in Roman Gaul. He participates in multidisciplinary research modeling the impact of the improvement of climatic conditions on the agricultural economy during the period of the High Empire and subsequently, their deterioration during that of Late Antiquity which are interpreted as an "optimum climate ”and the other as a“ Little Ice Age of Late Antiquity ”. The relationship between climate and society is realized in terms of rural economic adaptation to climatic fluctuations.
