L'expression de la saillance dans les clivées en wh- en anglais contemporain: prosodie, syntaxe, discours

Abstract : This paper deals with the notion of saliency in pseudo-cleft sentences (CWh: What we want is peace) and reverse clefts starting with that/this (CThat: That's what we want) in (semi)-spontaneous speech. We study the respective roles of syntax and prosody in the expression of saliency. We show that, if syntax expresses focalisation in CWh, prosody can increase saliency (on the clefted constituent or the wh-clause) or remain neutral. We show that CThat, as prosody partly indicates, are not truly " reverse clefts ". That is not focalised but only topicalised. But prosody can also play a part at a different level to indicate a different type of saliency: emphasis or contrast (in the clefted constituent or in the wh-clause).
