L'intimité collective : appropriations mémorielles dans l'oeuvre de Carmen Calvo (1970-2010)

Carmen Calvo, who has emerged as a major figure in contemporary art in Spain and on the international stage since the late 1980s, has carried out an exploration of the limits of the intimate which testifies to the radical renewal of perception and representation of intimacy. Born in Valencia in 1950, Carmen Calvo has carried out an artistic work that, beyond her individual trajectory, allows us to understand the mutations of the intimate life of a whole generation of women artists between 1970 and 2000. The analysis of the way Carmen Calvo reuses family's photography aims to show the paradoxical construction of a collective intimacy, associating a use of the family intimate archives and a memory appropriation to refer the Spanish society as a whole to its capacity for forgetting the victims of Francoism and the occultation of the historical trauma since the end of the dictatorship.

Carmen Calvo, qui s'est imposée comme une figure majeure de l'art contemporain en Espagne et sur la scène internationale depuis la fin des années 80, a mené une exploration des frontières de l'intime qui témoigne du renouveau radical de la perception et la représentation de l'intimité. Née en 1950 à Valence, Carmen Calvo a réalisé un parcours artistique qui, au-­delà de sa trajectoire individuelle, permet d'appréhender les mutations de l'intime chez toute une génération de plasticiens, entre 1970 et les années 2000. L'analyse des dispositifs photographiques fondés sur la récupération de photos de familles vise à montrer la construction paradoxale d'une intimité collective chez Carmen Calvo, qui mobilise une utilisation des archives intimes familiales et une appropriation mémorielle pour renvoyer la société espagnole dans son ensemble à sa capacité d’oubli des victimes du franquisme et d'occultation du trauma historique depuis la fin de la dictature.
